Announcement: We will be going dark on June 12 for a full week to protest Reddit's API changes (Details Inside)

What's Happening

Reddit has recently announced major changes to its API policies. These changes are expected to kill off most commercial third party applications, significantly impact the moderability of massive subreddits, and interfere with the ability of blind and visually impaired users to use the site. More detail about these changes can be found in links in a stickied comment below.

What we are doing

Based upon the overwhelming results of two community surveys (see here and here), all of the subreddits our team runs - r/brandonsanderson, r/mistborn, r/cosmere, and r/stormlight_archive - will be going dark for a week effective the first moment it is June 12 anywhere in the world. r/imaginary_cosmere and r/skyward will be joining us. ( r/cremposting is currently planning to shut down for June 12 and June 13 only, but this situation is changing rapidly; enquire there for more details as to their current stance).

Because of the relatively last minute change of plans, we will restrict submissions in these subreddits at approximately noon UTC (1pm British Summer Time, 8am Eastern Daylight Time, 5am Pacific Daylight Time) on Sunday, June 11 while leaving the subreddits visible to give people more time to see the announcements, and then we will mark the subreddits fully private at midnight UTC (1am BST June 12, 8pm EDT, 5pm PDT).

After a week, we will reopen to a limited extent while we resurvey. The subreddit will be placed in a restricted mode where only approved submitters can post but anyone can comment (much like the way r/Sanderson works), and we will post another survey at that time asking the community how we want to proceed.

A note from the mods

Lastly, we recognize that this has escalated very quickly. Many of us are both inspired by this community’s commitment to solidarity with the community of reddit developers, moderators, and users, and we’re also torn. Torn because we’ve watched this community grow and evolve over the years—most of us as members first. We want to thank you, sincerely, for being gracious leaders in the wider Reddit community, while we’ve spent this week figuring out what to do. And we trust you’ll help lead us in the right direction from here.

That said, we are looking at what options are in front of us, in the event that things continue to escalate, or the community feels it’s best to find a new home. If you have suggestions, please join the discussion in the comments below. If you’re a mod of another community, and would like to put our heads together, our modmail is open to you. (We will absolutely still be checking modmail, and would love to hear from you; if you need to contact us, please use this link)

Thank you all for a wonderful thirteen years (and hopefully counting). Life before death, Radiants.
